How often should the grease in the wheel hub of a semi-trailer be changed? TND Axle shares with you the detailed replacement steps

The axle is one of the key components of the trailer and is a set of core parts assembly. The performance of the axle is directly related to the load-bearing, braking and driving of the vehicle. Therefore, good maintenance and care of the axle is crucial to the operational safety of the vehicle.

Generally speaking, the maintenance of trailer axles mainly includes lubricating grease filling/replacement, fastener inspection, brake clearance adjustment, brake drum/brake pad inspection, etc. These maintenance items usually have a recommended cycle, and the owner can refer to it according to the actual use of their vehicle:

As can be seen from the above table, the replacement cycle of wheel hub grease is generally half a year or 50,000 kilometers. Of course, this is an ordinary trailer axle. If it is a maintenance-free axle, the maintenance cycle will be extended accordingly, reaching 500,000 or 800,000 kilometers. There are also certain differences in the maintenance methods of the two.

Maintenance of ordinary trailer axles:

1. Remove the wheel hub, clean the bearing, journal, and wheel hub cavity, clean and wash the old grease, and then wipe the cavity dry with a clean rag;

2. Inspect the wheel hub, bearing, bearing race, etc. If there are cracks, looseness, loose rollers, etc., replace them in time;

3. Inspect the clearance between the inner diameter of the bearing and the shaft diameter. When measuring, select the upper and lower points where the shaft diameter is perpendicular to the ground. If the clearance is greater than 0.1mm, the bearing needs to be replaced;

4. Add an appropriate amount of new grease between the inner race of the bearing and the roller. A thin layer is enough. Too much grease will easily affect heat dissipation and braking;

5. Install the wheel hub.

Maintenance of maintenance-free trailer axles:

1. Check the lubricating oil level through the transparent cover at the end of the axle regularly to see if it is normal, whether it is deteriorating or discolored, and add or replace it on time;

2. Open the oil filling hole every 12 months or 100,000 kilometers, and use a magnet probe to penetrate the lubricating oil to check if there are iron filings or impurities;

3. Check the wheel hub fasteners regularly to see if they are loose, whether the wheel hub cover is damaged, and whether there is oil leakage; every 12 months or 100,000 kilometers, lift the wheel end to check if there is abnormal noise during rotation and whether the bearing shakes abnormally.

Some car owners think that they can be "maintenance-free" because they use maintenance-free axles, so they ignore them during operation. In fact, this is completely wrong, because "maintenance-free" means that the maintenance cycle is long, not that maintenance is not required, especially when the vehicle's operating conditions are relatively complex, its maintenance cycle should be shortened accordingly, and related maintenance inspection work is even more indispensable. Even within the maintenance mileage range, it is recommended that car owners do repairs and maintenance work on time.
