What kind of axle is a circumferential disc axle? What kind of vehicle is a circumferential disc axle used on?

The axle is related to the load-bearing, braking and driving of the vehicle, and is one of the most critical components on the vehicle. With the continuous development of vehicle technology, various types of axles have emerged in an endless stream: those with stronger load-bearing capacity, more stable braking effect, and lighter axle weight... Circumferential disc axle is one of them.

The so-called circumferential disc axle refers to an axle that combines the dual characteristics of a drum axle and a disc axle. From the appearance point of view, this brake does not have a sealed brake drum, and the brake pad is directly exposed to the air like a disc axle; from the structural point of view, the structure and braking principle of the brake pad are the same as those of a drum axle.

This type of brake is designed with two layers of inner and outer brake pads, and a ventilation structure in the middle. When the owner steps on the brake pedal, the inner brake pad is stretched outward, and the outer brake pad is clamped inward, forming a "stretching inside and hugging outside" state. The two layers of brake pads are rubbed and braked at the same time, and the braking force is greater. At the same time, the double-layer brake pad is equivalent to providing double insurance for driving brakes. Even if one layer of brake pad has problems, the other layer can also play a braking role.

In addition, the exposed design also determines its excellent heat dissipation ability. The brake is exposed to the air, and the heat dissipation performance is higher. The air guide design between the two layers of brake pads can also blow air into the brake as the wheel rotates, accelerating heat dissipation.

On the whole, the circumferential disc brake can provide strong and stable braking force, as well as excellent and efficient heat dissipation ability. It is very suitable for use in freight vehicles such as semi-trailers and mid-axle trailers.

But to this day, the circumferential disc axle has not only failed to become popular, but has begun to disappear. Why is this?

One of the reasons is that the classification of the axle is unclear. The name of the circumferential disc axle contains disc, but the structure is more like a drum. So should it be a disc or a drum? Does the installation of such an axle on a three-axle fence or a three-axle warehouse grid meet the requirements of the regulations? Because the regulations do not clearly define the category of this brake, many car owners are afraid of being fined after going on the road and dare not install and use it easily.

Another reason is that the circumferential disc axle is indeed very good in principle, but there is a lack of data support for its actual application effect, especially the circumferential disc brake is exposed to the outside, and sand and dust can easily enter the brake, affecting the braking effect and damaging the brake pads. If the vehicle often travels on some more complicated road conditions, I am afraid that the frequency of scrapping the brake pads will also increase.

Therefore, although the circumferential disc axle attracted the attention of many people in the industry when it came out and was reported by the media, its subsequent development trend has been downward. After all, for car owners, principles are principles after all. Even if the principles are fantastic, they will not buy them if the actual data cannot stand up to scrutiny. Only when the product quality is up to standard and can stand the test of the market, will car owners rush to use it and take the initiative to help it open up the market.
