How to identify the number of axles and lines of a semi-trailer?

Publish Time: 2025-01-10
In the field of road transportation in China, a type of vehicle with high transportation efficiency, low transportation cost, and a large number of types and quantities of cargo is widely used, that is, the semi-trailer, which plays an extremely important role, especially in medium and long-distance transportation.

According to the different types of goods transported, semi-trailers can be divided into many types such as fence type, warehouse type, box type, frame type, tank type, container type, self-unloading type, flatbed type, and sedan type.

According to the different loading capacity of the transported goods, the tonnage of the semi-trailer is also different, ranging from a few tons to more than ten tons to dozens of tons and hundreds of tons. In general, the more axles a semi-trailer has, the greater the load capacity.

How many axles do semi-trailers have?

The number of axles of ordinary semi-trailers ranges from one axle to six axles, but the three-axle semi-trailer has the widest application range and is the most common.

How to tell how many axles a semi-trailer has? In fact, it is very simple. After looking at the picture above, you may understand that it is to count from the side how many sets of tires are installed on the semi-trailer. One set of tires represents one axle.

According to the new version of GB1589 standard, the maximum load limit of cargo vehicles is 49t, that is, the maximum load capacity of a six-axle semi-trailer is 49t. So how many axles do the semi-trailers mentioned above that transport hundreds of tons have?

Strictly speaking, these semi-trailers are different from ordinary semi-trailers. They are special special-purpose vehicles, mainly used to transport large non-disassembled goods, and cannot be used for the transportation of ordinary goods. For example, three-line six-axle semi-trailers, four-line eight-axle semi-trailers, five-line ten-axle semi-trailers, six-line twelve-axle semi-trailers, seven-line fourteen-axle semi-trailers, etc.

These semi-trailers are basically "giants" in the industry, and their transport weight limit is far greater than that of ordinary semi-trailers. For example, three-line six-axle semi-trailers can generally transport large cargo within 80t, four-line eight-axle semi-trailers can transport large cargo within 100t, five-line ten-axle semi-trailers can transport large cargo within 120t, and so on.

How to see how many axles are installed on such a semi-trailer? Please see the picture below:

This is a three-line six-axle semi-trailer, that is, three rows of wheels are installed on the semi-trailer, one row of wheels has two axles in parallel, a total of six axles, which is the origin of the name "three-line six-axle".

Similarly, the nine-line eighteen-axle semi-trailer below has a total of nine rows of wheels from the side, and two axles are installed in parallel in one row, a total of eighteen axles. And so on.

As you can see, there are a lot of tires on such semi-trailers for large-scale transportation. For example, a three-line six-axle semi-trailer has three rows of wheels, two axles in one row, and two tires installed on both ends of an axle, for a total of 24 tires. The more axles there are, the more tires there are. Therefore, such semi-trailers are also called "crawling on the ground" in the industry. The reason for designing so many tires is that the load of this semi-trailer is too large and the damage to the road surface is too strong. By increasing the contact area between the tire and the road surface, the pressure on the road surface is reduced.

The axle of the semi-trailer may seem inconspicuous, but it actually bears the entire load of the body and cargo. In addition to ensuring the driving of the vehicle, it must also cooperate with the braking system of the tractor to maintain sensitive, stable and good braking performance. Therefore, the stability of the performance of a semi-trailer depends largely on whether the axle is selected correctly.

TND Axle is a national high-tech group company specializing in the research, design and manufacture of heavy-duty vehicle parts such as trailers and semi-trailers. It has accumulated 17 years of industry experience. As a supplier of the rear half of the semi-trailer body (cargo part), TND Axle has innovated and improved on the basis of military technology, creating a new era of seamless steel pipe hot extrusion one-piece thickened axles. With an annual output of about 100,000 sets of axle series and 20,000 sets of suspension series, we are tailor-made for heavy-duty semi-trailers. We have our own patents and other advanced equipment.
