Popular Science Knowledge: What kind of bridges are the axles on trailers? What are the types of trailer axles?

Publish Time: 2024-10-25
The axle is one of the key load-bearing components of the vehicle. It is connected to the vehicle body through a suspension at the top and the wheels are installed at both ends. It can support the weight of the vehicle body and maintain the normal driving of the vehicle on the road.

The axle can be integral, with an appearance like a large barbell, or it can be disconnected, like two umbrellas inserted on both sides of the vehicle body. Depending on the driving mode, the axle can also be divided into a driving axle, a steering axle, a steering driving axle and a supporting axle.

In general, whether it is a semi-trailer, a full trailer or a mid-axle trailer, its function is to provide cargo loading space. In most cases, it does not have its own driving force and needs to rely on the power of the tractor to achieve driving. Therefore, most of the axles on the trailer do not need to have a driving function. They are supporting axles, which can also be called driven axles.

The support axle is a type of integral axle, which is mainly composed of axle beam, camshaft, metal support seat, brake assembly, wheel end assembly and other components. The structural design is relatively simple. The integrated axle beam can provide greater bearing force and torque. It is often used in combination with non-independent suspension to meet the transportation needs of the vehicle. Daily maintenance is also more convenient, which is suitable for owners with high requirements for vehicle attendance rate.

Although the trailer axle also belongs to the support axle, its models and specifications are very diverse, which is also to meet the use requirements of different transportation conditions. In general, the common types of trailer axles mainly include the following:

Disc axles were previously used on passenger cars. After the update of GB7258, it is required that three-axle fences and warehouse-type semi-trailers must use disc brakes.

The biggest feature of the disc axle is light weight, fast heat dissipation, fast braking response, good linear stability, strong resistance to thermal decay and water decay. The disadvantage is that the braking force is relatively small and it is not suitable for heavy cargo transportation. Some transport conditions that require high protection of goods, such as the transport of hazardous chemicals, precision instruments, valuables, vegetables, fruits and flowers, are suitable for disc axles.

Drum axles are the most familiar axles to freight truck owners and are also the most widely used type on trailers. They can be used in almost all types of transport conditions with low requirements for cargo damage. Their technical conditions are relatively mature and their selling prices are cheaper. In addition, their accessories are universal, easy to buy and replace, and relatively convenient to repair and maintain.

Drum axles have sealed brake drums, which can provide more sufficient braking force. The disadvantage is that thermal attenuation and water attenuation are more obvious, and the stability is not as good as disc axles. In general, drum axles are particularly suitable for heavy cargo transportation, such as coal, wood, sand and gravel, steel, cement, etc.

Low-flat axle, a special axle for large flatbed trucks, is characterized by low ground clearance, low center of gravity, high wall thickness, and high strength. It can provide sufficient support, improve transportation stability, and enhance the convenience of getting on and off the vehicle. It is generally used for the transportation of large and non-disassembled goods such as mechanical equipment, large tanks, building materials equipment, and power station equipment.

Concave axle, also called eccentric axle, as the name suggests, its axle beam and wheel end center are not on the same horizontal line. Through the inverted door-shaped design, the height of the vehicle chassis is further lowered.

Concave axle also reduces the height of the car body to a certain extent, and can increase the loading space of the cargo compartment within the scope of regulations. It is mostly used in car transporters, and some models that have requirements for the center of gravity of the vehicle can also be applied. The disadvantage is that the vehicle has poor ability to cope with complex road conditions, especially on bumpy roads, it is easy to hit the chassis, and the transportation road conditions are required to be high.

Three-line six-axle axle is a special axle model for large or extra-large transport vehicles. It has a strong load-bearing capacity, generally up to about 80t. If it is a four-line eight-axle, five-line ten-axle model, the load-bearing capacity is even stronger, even up to hundreds of tons or several hundred tons.

One of the most obvious features of multi-axis axles is the large number of wheels and small size, which can reduce the average pressure at the contact point between the tire and the road, reducing or avoiding road damage.

Light axles refer to supporting axles with a tonnage of less than 10t. Common ones include 9t, 8t, 6t, 5t, 3t, and 1.5t. They are mainly used in farms, travel, field operations, and other fields, such as station transport vehicles, luggage transport vehicles, grain transport vehicles, fertilizer spreaders, forage pickers, trailer RVs, campers, power equipment trailers, yacht trailers, motorcycle trailers, etc. Their common characteristics are light tonnage, various upper designs, and different functions. As a result, there are many differences in their production parameters and a small number of accessories. Therefore, they tend to be customized in production.

About TND

TND Axle is a national high-tech group company specializing in the research and development, design and manufacturing of heavy-duty vehicle parts such as trailers and semi-trailers. It has obtained multiple international quality standard certifications such as IATF 16949:2016. The main products are: American axles, German axles, air suspension, bogie suspension, mechanical suspension and other trailer parts, with an annual output of about 100,000 sets of axle series and 20,000 sets of suspension series. TND has innovated and improved on the basis of military technology, creating a new era of seamless steel tube hot extrusion one-piece thickened axles. This advanced technology can greatly improve the strength, stiffness and fatigue life of the axle beam and reduce the risk of fatigue fracture of the axle. We have our own patented hot forming machines and other advanced equipment, including: fatigue testing machine, ultrasonic flaw detector, Brinell hardness tester, thickness gauge, spectrometer, metallographic analyzer, coordinate measuring machine, etc., and are supported by professional engineers in our R&D department and a strict quality control team.

TND Axle's industry experience has won the trust and welcome of the majority of users. We will continue to provide high-quality trailers, semi-trailers and other heavy-duty vehicle parts and good after-sales service to new and old customers for common development! TND looks forward to working with you to create a brilliant and win-win future.
